Did you know? - July - Thursday

This is the 3rd in the series this week to help parents and children prepare. We do have an important note:

The actual race is at the aquatic center on 8th and E. San Salvador. There is NO athlete parking at this location. Normally we use the parking garage located at 7th and San Salvador and then walk over. This garage 'may' be closed due to resealing. Check it first. If it is use the following garages:

North Garage is on the corner of E. San Fernando and S. 9th Street. West Garage is at E. San Salvador between 4th and 5th Street.

Make sure you know where you are going ahead of time. We typcially have parents scrambling lost on campus right before the event.

Did you know?

1. We are giving out race belts as swag for this event. They are very cool. Race belts are used to hold the bib number around the waist.

2. Your child will receive a medal when he crosses the finish line.

3. We will have a new entrance to transition. Do not use the transition entrances for placing or removing your items. Parents will not be allowed to use those entrances. Do not cross the finish line straight away except in the designated area.

Did you know? - July - Wed

This is the Did you know? series designed to help first timers.

1. Did you know that we spread out the start waves a bit to ensure more safety.

2. USAT license cost $5.00 and can be bought during check in.

3. We have a professional photographer at the event: Scott Schilling Photography.

4. Transition is where your kids tranistion from swim to bike and bike to run. They will set their bike, helmet, and running gear in this area. We have someone there to help you in the morning. Transition closes when the first wave starts in the pool.

5. Most kids will ride their bike and run in their bathing suit. Putting a t shirt on in transition works as well. Make sure they have their bib numbers on when out on course.

6. We also have helmet stickers for them to track their laps. Please make sure these are on the front of the helmets.

7. Make sure your child knows not to draft. Drafting is riding too close to another childs rear wheel. We will issue a 2:00 penalty if this observed and a warning is ignored.

More tomorrow. Thanks

Did you know? - July - Tuesday

Well this series has been a huge success. We went from 56 kids at our first one to 150 plus at this one. Next year we will be shooting for around 250. The greatest part of being a success is the fact that we can give to Jenny's Light. If you are not aware of what that means please see the Jenny's Light website here for details: Link to site

Did you know?

1. We have expanded the timeline a bit to give kids more of a chance to spread out. See the website for details.

2. We have new medals this time.

3. Becky Lavelle and Gina Kehr will be on hand.

4. If you have not received your USAT license from a prior event yet, we check a list when you check in.

5. We have enough kids this event that we will be running 6-7 waves, males and females will be seperate in a few classes.

More tomorrow! Thanks

The next event is July 25th. This one is already filling up fast so make sure to register early before it is sold out.

Did you know that we are giving out custom race number belts at the final event of this series? The kids will love these. No more pinning bib numbers to their shirts :)

We look forward to seeing each of you there, it will be lots of fun.

Updated Points Totals - General Info

We have the points totals updated here: Link Please let us know if you see any issues. Kids that have competed in multiple divisions will get combined point at the end of the series.

Please make sure you check out the photos from the last event here: Photo Link

Becky Lavelle is doing well after the birth of her baby. She will be at the July 25th event. We are working on getting Gina Kehr out as well.

Make sure to register soon. This event will sell out like the last one.

One last note on rules. Please go over with your children what drafting means. Drafting is against USAT rules. Drafting means you are riding your bike right behind someone else making it easier for yourself. We had some compaints about the older kids doing this. Let's try to be fair for everyone.

Thanks

Did you know? - June - Thursday

Did you know?

1. We will have a few people in transition to help you setup and to help your children.

2. Most kids put their number on the shirt they slide on after they exit the water. Some also use speed belts.

3. For returning kids we have speed laces for their shoes as swag.

4. We have a checklist for USAT if you have already been to one of our events, otherwise bring your license or we can provide an application.

5. We send out the directions on Saturday to the event.

6. We are always looking for parents to help watch the kids on course, please let us know if you can help.

7. Professional Photographer Scott Schilling will be on hand to take pictures.

8. Often we get the results listed in local papers.

9. We can also use parents in the pool area to help pull kids out of the water. Please stay clear of the blue carpet though.

Thanks

We use an RFID chip timing system on the bib numbers. Results are nearly immediate.
7. We hand out prizes and take pictures on the podium provided by Van Ornum Woodworking.
8. Concept Cyclery will be there to help with your bikes. And we have a few loaners. We highly suggest you have your child's bike looked at if it's making any noise.

Volunteers
1. We could use 2 or 3 more volunteers on course. If your part of a club or participate in one of our other events and can come out for a few hours please let us know. We will give you free entry into an event of your choice.
2.

The next Kids Triathlon is fast approaching on June 20, 2010.
Also, wanted to give an update on Becky and Brian Lavelle - they are still awaiting the arrival of their baby (should be any day now). We wish them all the best.

Looking forward to seeing everyone there. Remember this is a fun event with great volunteers to make your day special.

Did you know? - May - Thursday

Did you know?

1. USAT stands for USA Triathlon.

2. USAT not only provides insurance for events, they are also a sanctioning body behind Triathlons and Duathlons.

3. A USAT license is required for this event. A license can be purchased on site for $5.00. If your child has one please remember to bring it. NOTE: if you purchased at the last event, tell us we can look it up.

4. USAT sanctioned events are not any more difficult and should not be scary, they believe in kids having fun!

5. A helmet is required for the bike ride. We will bring some spares.

6. Every Kid receives a medal!

7. We have great volunteer food and can always use some parents on course. Please let us know if you can help.

Kids Nutrition Tip

Why is healthy eating important for my child?
Many more children in the United States are being diagnosed with high cholesterol, or as overweight or obese. These conditions can cause many health problems for your child such as diabetes and high blood pressure. These conditions can affect your child now and later as an adult.

By helping your child establish a healthy diet and regular exercise, you can reduce his or her risk of experiencing these health problems.

How can I help my child eat right?
Set an example for your child. If you prepare nutritious foods for your family and eat healthy foods yourself, your child will eat healthier, too.

Make sure to provide a variety of foods, so your family gets all the vitamins and minerals their bodies need to function properly.

For more information on healthy eating, visit our handout for adults on making healthier choices.

Did you know? - April - Monday

The Jenny’s Light Kids Triathlon is coming up next Sunday April 18th. We thought we would take the opportunity to update you daily as the event approaches. Many kids are beginners (and maybe parents too), so we like to communicate and send helpful information.

Please expect these did you knows each day this week. Please share them with your children!

Did you know:

1. Kickboards are allowed for the swim. Swimming can be intimidating for everyone, not just kids. So we like to make them feel safe.

2. Any type of bike is allowed. Mountain bike, road bikes, etc. The most important thing behind safety is too have fun. We have a few spare bikes if you know someone who needs one. Please let us know ahead of time.

3. Every kid will receive a t shirt and medal. For kids that have already received a t shirt at the first event we have cool drawstring bags.

4. Professional Triathlete Kelly Couch will be there to meet you and your children.

5. Many children do these events in their bathing suit the whole time. But they do need to have a shirt on. The bib number will either be on a speed belt or pinned to the shirt. They can simply put this over their bathing suit.

6. We have added a Super Junior Age group for 5 and 6 year olds.

7. We have made some adjustments to the distances. Please review! We have shortened the swim a bit for seniors.

8. We have created a slow zone on the bike so we can slap bracelets on for each lap. Make sure your child knows how many they need. Seniors need 4 bracelets on the 5 lap bike ride. Juniors would need 3, and so on.

9. Each familiy will have fun!

The entire event is held on closed campus.

We have made an adjustment to the Senior start time. They are much faster so we would like to clear them off or be close.

Transition will open: 7:00am

Same day registration and packet pickup: 7:00am - 8:00am

Announcements: 8:00am

Wave 1 (12-14) start: 8:15am
Wave 2 (9-10) start: 8:40am
Wave 3 (7-8) start: 8:50am
Wave 3 (5-6) start: 9:00am

Tomorrow we will send out information regarding how to put your number on, and how to setup transition.

Access to Pictures and Other News

Pictures

I have this note from Scott Schilling Photography (please support the photographer if you want them to continue to come out):

"Congratulations to all of the participants of the Jenny's Light Kids Triathlon! It was a fantastic event!

I just uploaded the final processed images . I am hopeful that we were able to capture shots of each participant!

The link is www.photoshelter.com/c/scottschilling you can then click on galleries at the top and then click on the Jenny's light gallery or you will see it listed on the left hand side of the home page

The Gallery is Jenny's Light 3/21/2010

The password is "fast123"

You can easily scroll through the participant images to find your image and then click "add to cart". On the cart you will see a 'print option' for 5x7's and a 'download option' - click which you would prefer for that image.
You can add as many images to your cart as you would like, and then follow the check out instructions.

5x7 Prints can be ordered for $8
A Download of the original jpeg file is available for $6

All of the purchasing and ordering can be done directly from the site - the gallery is password protected so it IS NOT available to the general public

Please email me with any questions.

Have a great week!

Scott F. Schilling Photography
scottfschilling@mac.com "

Changes

In other news we have changed two things on the registration form. We have created a Super Junior class for 5-6 year olds. They will no longer be in the same class as 7-8 year old. In addition the registratation form will now calculate your "race" age.

We have also adjusted the lengths of the next race a bit. The seniors lose 100 in the swim but gain an extra mile on the bike. We are also enlarging the transition area.

We are also going to try slap bracelets to track laps. We'll see if that is faster.

Let us know if you want to come out on the 18th to volunteer! We need as many as possible.

Points Tracking

On the results tab we have added the current points standings. We plan to give out something cool to the kids at the end of the year. See here: Link

Please register soon. We would like to see more out for the next event. Invite your friends and family! Soccer teams! Swim team buddies! Thanks

Series 1 Feedback

First off, please continue to do this:

1. Great venue. Lots of close parking. Low key.
2. Friendly and knowledgeable volunteers. Made on-site preparations easy.
3. Medal for every finisher, along with goodie bag and t-shirt.
4. Announce as many of the kid's names as they finished.

Feedback on your comments:

1. Larger transition area and we may number racks ahead of time. YES!
2. Our website will calculate your age for USAT. YES!
3. Push the finish line away from registration a bit for more room. YES!
4. Continue finish line chute further to keep finish area clear. YES!
5. How were the distances?

My 7-yr-old thought the distance was perfect, while my 13-year old wouldn't mind 1 more bike lap and 1 less run lap, which would mean 5 mile biking, and 1.5 mile running. Seems proportionately correct.

6. Wave start times?

You have the distinct advantage of being a small event. With only 3 waves, why not run each wave 30 minutes apart? 8:30 Sr., 9:00 Intermediate, 9:30 Junior & Super Juniors. You'd sacrifice 40 minutes over the current format, but to the tremendous benefit of less traffic & confusion... and the kids can watch & cheer for kids in other waves.

7. Actually use age groups rather then each individual age. Create a new group for Super Juniors. 5-6 years old. YES!

8. We can bring out our podium for awards. Thoughts?

An award podium for top boys/girls would be a nice touch, but not mandatory. I thought calling out their names and taking a picture with Becky was already pretty cool.

Thanks for being open to feedback. All in all, we had a blast, and look forward to seeing whatever improvements you decide to make. We'll be recruiting friends to join us in April at this very fun event.

Kids Triathlon Series 1 - Review

We had a great event for our first time. The results are up on the results tab for the event.

Here are a couple if sample pictures from the event. Scott Schilling Photographing will have photos up on his site in about a week. We will email everyone then. Please support your photographers so they continue to come out.

I would like some honest feedback on the event. We have some issues we are going to adjust but we love hearing from everyone, good or bad. I think the number one issue was parents and kids having to deal with us marking the bibs for lap counts. The goal here is to help the kids count their laps. Most kids here are not experienced. That said for the next event we are going to try what the Silicon Valley Tri does. We will use slap bracelets. They go on very quickly and the kids only need to slow a bit. But I'm open to suggestions.

Other items we will adjust:

1. Larger transition area and we may number racks ahead of time.
2. Our website will calculate your age for USAT.
3. Push the finish line away from registration a bit for more room.
4. Continue finish line chute further to keep finish area clear.
5. How were the distances? Seniors averaged about 30 minutes-35 minutes, Intermediates averaged about 20-25 minutes, and Juniors averaged about 15 minutes. Should we go longer or leave alone?
6. We may spread out start times a bit more, but this creates the complexity of transition being clear earlier. Thoughts? Goal here would be to have the older kids off the bikes.
7. Actually use age groups rather then each individual age. Create a new group for Super Juniors. 5-6 years old. It appears the other age groups compete pretty evenly.
8. We can bring out our podium for awards. Thoughts? Our initial thoughts were to keep things even. But maybe kids would like it.

Please register on the blog site to interact and type in your event thoughts. So far the feedback has been really, really positive.

More pictures:

Thanks

Directions to SJSU

Please park in the parking garage on 7th Street and E. San Salvador.
Directions from the South Bay: Link
Directions from the North Bay: Link

Once you exit the parking garage we are on the next block. 8th street, just walk over.

Make sure you are on time. Transition opens at 7:00 am to setup your childs stuff and closes at 8:15 am. Packet pickup is at 7:00am until roughly 8:00am. First wave (older kids) is at 8:30, then 8:40, then 8:50. I'm guessing most kids will take about 30-45 minutes to complete the triathlon.

We are stressing fun. So no one can do anything wrong. We have people in transition to help setup and during the event. A parent can be present if younger children need help, but please stay clear of the kids coming through.

Last minute check list to bring

Did you know? - Monday

The Jenny’s Light Kids Triathlon is coming up next Sunday. We thought we would take the opportunity to update you daily as the event approaches. Many kids are beginners (and maybe parents too), so we like to communicate and send helpful information.

We thought we start the week with a series of ‘did you knows’. Please review with your children if you choose.

Did you know:

1. Kickboards are allowed for the swim. Swimming can be intimidating for everyone, not just kids. So we like to make them feel safe.

2. Any type of bike is allowed. Mountain bike, road bikes, etc. The most important thing behind safety is too have fun.

3. Every kid will receive a t shirt and medal.

4. Becky and Brian Lavelle will be there to meet you and your children.

5. Many children do these events in their bathing suit the whole time. But they do need to have a shirt on. The bib number will either be on a speed belt or pinned to the shirt. They can simply put this over their bathing suit.

6. Each age and gender is its own group even if they start in the same wave.

7. Every person will have fun!

We do have a couple of changes we want to announce and please provide feedback. We are always open to suggestions. The course has been shortened a bit from the very long distances we had. 5-8 year olds will do 50 yard swim, 1 mile bike, and ½ mile run. 9-11 year olds will do 150 yard swim, 2 mile bike, and 1 mile run, 12-14 year olds will do 300 yard swim, 4 mile bike, and 2 mile run. All on campus. All watched by volunteers.

We have also pushed times back a little due to daylight savings:

Transition will open: 7:00am

Kids Triathlon Goal

We are an energetic, on the go type of family and when it comes to my daughter she is no different. She enjoys being outdoors and running so we figured why not let her compete in a triathlon.

Triathlons are a fun and exciting way to entertain and allow your child to reach for a short term goal while having fun and staying healthy at the same time. When my daughter, Trinity, completed her first triathlon, she was thrilled and the look on her face was priceless.

Health Risks with Triathlons

Although triathlons are a great sport for kids to become involved in, one has to stop and consider the health risks involved. Triathlons can be grueling for adults, who can experience dehydration, injury, and heat exhaustion; so it’s important that the children are ready when they join a triathlon. Parents should remember that their children need to train appropriately and adhere to age-appropriate distances for each stage in the triathlon. Beware of overtraining, especially for those children that have never been involved in a triathlon or do not get regular exercise.

Popularity of Kids Triathlons

I had no idea how popular triathlons have become with children. I did a search on-line for information regarding the sport and I was impressed by the number of races and other triathlon events are offered for children. I always thought that triathlons were more a sport for adults. But if you consider how it combines three sports that children love—biking, swimming, and running---it’s no surprise that participation by youngsters is growing. Now more than ever, it’s important to get our children involved in any form of exercise. The percentage of children that are overweight in America is increasing, and the chances of getting diabetes increases in overweight children. I think training for and participating in triathlons is a great way for kids to become healthy and active. Winning isn’t everything. Participation is just as significant as competition.

Aside from the various web sites for triathlons that have taken place or will take place in various cities and states, there are two informative sites on triathlons in general: http://www.usatriathlon.org/ and http://www.ironkids.com/

Alternative to TV

Does your child play a lot of video games or watch a lot of TV? If you are looking for alternatives to get your child more active, you might want to consider getting your child involved in triathlons. Most kids love to ride their bikes, go for swims, and burn off energy by running around. Why not combine all three and participate in a triathlon while they’re at it?

In the past few years, triathlons have become more and more popular with our youth. Course length varies depending on your child’s age. For example, at this year’s Silicon Valley Kids Triathlon, kids in the 11-12 age group swam 200 yards, biked 6 miles, and ran 1.25 miles. But for the 6-year-olds and younger, the course included a 25-yard swim, one-mile bike ride, and a quarter mile run.

So help your kids become healthier and stronger. They can be active participants and enjoy the great outdoors instead of passive spectators sitting in front of a TV or monitor indoors.

Sillicon Valley Kids Triathlon

This year's 10th Annual Silicon Valley Kids Triathlon was a resounding success! We extend our congratulations to all of the young athletes for successfully challenging yourselves in this Swim - Bike - Run event. We hope everyone had a good time. Please keep up with your training and stay active.

The net proceeds of the SV Kids Triathlon are donated to the Silicon Valley Children's Fund (http://www.svcf.org). We are happy to report that even in these tough economic times the Kids Tri raised $12,000 for this wonderful charity. A check in that amount was presented to the Children's Fund by the Silicon Valley Triathlon Club at its July membership meeting.

Ironkids

The IronKids' mission is to inspire and motivate youth through the sport to lead an active, positive and healthy lifestyle. The national event series, targeting children ages six to 15-years-old, will offer an interactive weekend experience for the entire family.

The goal of the IronKids Series will be to host approximately 300-400 participants per event between the ages of six and 15 years old. Children will compete in age-appropriate distances with an emphasis on fitness, fun and safety.

WTC acquired IronKids from the Sara Lee Corporation who had owned the event series since 1985. IronKids' Races have seen more than 40,000 participants in its history. IronKids has introduced some of the sport's greats with past participants including seven-time Tour de France champion, Lance Armstrong and U.S. Olympians, Hunter Kemper and Laura Bennett.

Michelle Payette, who joined WTC in 2008, will use her experience in event management to oversee the IronKids branded event series. Based in Phuket, Thailand, for nine years, Payette served as Race Manager for Ironman Malaysia and for the Laguna Phuket Triathlon. Most recently, Payette was managing events for Tourism Whistler (B.C. Canada) on behalf of the resort community.

The IronKids mission is to inspire and motivate youth through sport to lead an active, positive and healthy lifestyle. IronKids provides families with a weekend event experience that is educational, interactive and fun.

To ensure IronKids leaves a footprint throughout the U.S., IronKids has developed a ‘Legacy Program’ that will focus on educating students on the importance of nutrition and physical activity, encouraging children to adopt the IronKids lifestyle.

The IronKids team consists of WTC staff, local contractors, host-city Parks and Recreation Departments, City workers (Fire, Police, Permitting, etc.), local Convention & Visitors Bureaus, Sport Commissions, ASI Photography, Prime Time Timing, Premier Sports Timing, local triathlon clubs and of course many, many volunteers.

The Race Directors for the IronKids Series are as follows:
